Coach’s Wife Spends All Season Trying to Figure Out How Half the Bleachers Are Related to Willy

MARIANNA, FL – As the Marianna Swamp Donkeys 8U baseball team battles through a rocky season, Coach’s wife, Mandy Campbell, has been grappling with a mystery more confounding than her husband’s lineup choices: the sprawling family tree of player William “Willy” Jenkins, whose kin seem to occupy half the bleachers at every game.

“Like, does he have four uncles?” Mandy mused, squinting at the sea of Jenkinses during Saturday’s 6-2 loss to the Milton Mullets. “I mean, I don’t have a problem with it, it’s just so interesting—perplexing, really. I don’t even think there’s a divorce in the family, which makes it even more puzzling.  And is Willy the only one in their family who does sports? They’re at every game. I even saw them at his rec league basketball game in January!”

The Jenkins clan, armed with matching team visors and an industrial cooler of snacks, has turned the bleachers into a family reunion. Mandy’s notebook, originally for tracking pitch counts, now sketches a tangled web of aunts, cousins, and “maybe a great-grandaddy?” She’s overheard names like Uncle Rusty, Cousin DeeDee, and “Big Jim,” but their relation to Willy remains elusive. “I asked one lady if she was Willy’s mom, and she laughed and said, ‘Naw, I’m his second cousin once removed!’” Mandy recounted, baffled. “What does that even mean?”

The kids don’t care. “Willy’s family’s loud,” said catcher Brax, who likes their candy stash. “They cheer even when he strikes out.” Willy, shrugging, said, “They’re just my people. They like ballgames.” His mom, Lisa Jenkins, grinned: “We’re a big crew. Keeps it fun!”

Mandy’s mission persists. She’s considering a flowchart for clues. “I saw a guy I didn’t recognize in a Jenkins Family Reunion T-shirt at the concession stand,” she whispered. “Is he another uncle? A superfan? Or the fourth cousin third removed?” As the Swamp Donkeys limp toward their next game, the bleachers remain a Jenkins jamboree, and Mandy’s no closer to cracking the code.
