DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, FL – Coach Earl Thompson of the DeFuniak Rings 8U baseball team believed his pre-game speech would rally his young sluggers for Saturday’s game. Channeling Vince Lombardi, he passionately and theatrically cried out, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing!” Then, quoting Michael Jordan, he added, “I’ve failed over and over, and that’s why I succeed.” Coach Earl had a tear running down his face, convinced that his words would fire up the kids.

As Earl reached his speech’s climax, half the team yelled, “LET’S GO!!!” A surge of adrenaline ran through his bones, thinking that he had done it, he’d finally gotten his team pumped, focused, and ready to hit the field—that is, until Harrison shouted, “You capped it!” Coach Earl looked down, and that’s when he saw half the team, amazed that Brayden had landed a plastic water bottle upside-down. “Perfect cap,” confirmed Liam, fist-bumping Brayden as Earl stood baffled and a little crushed.

Just then, the very moment when Coach Earl was processing that his well-timed and perfectly toned speech was not going to be the next Hoosier’s locker-room speech, he heard Grayson brag about how his mom packed fruit roll-ups for team snacks. “Cherry and strawberry!” he boasted. Warren asked if the sandwiches were crust-free, and Noah begged for an extra Capri Sun if there were any leftovers. “I’m dropping some MJ dynamite, and they’re bartering snacks,” Earl groaned.

The Rings fell 7-4, with Brayden missing a pop fly, still buzzing from his bottle flip. Grayson deemed the day a win for “epic” fruit roll-ups. Coach Earl vowed he’d never give another pregame speech—nor allow water bottles in the dugout.
