SARALAND, AL— Tensions boiled over at Field 3 Saturday afternoon when a routine grounder slipped under the glove of 11-year-old shortstop Mason, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The real damage, however, came not from the scoreboard—but from the withering stare shot across the bleachers by pitcher Aiden’s mom, Kristin.
Witnesses described the stare as “deeply personal,” “kidney stoneish,” and “something you feel in your spine.”
“I saw it happen in slow motion,” said one parent. “The error, the gasp, and then—boom—laser beams from Kristin straight through Courtney’s soul.”
Courtney, Mason’s mom, attempted to deflect the blow with a weak smile and mouthing, “Sorry,” as she took a polite sip from her Stanley cup and visibly wilted under the pressure of Kristin’s judgment.
“I’m not mad,” Kristin later said as she vigorously adjusted her foldable chair for optimal line of sight. “I’m just disappointed. And maybe questioning why they don’t spend more time practicing grounders at home.”
“My baby’s out there pitching his heart out,” Kristin was overheard whispering to no one in particular, “and Courtney is yelling ‘shake it off baby,’ you’re good. But he’s not good. If he was good, he would’ve fielded the grounder!”
Sources confirm Kristin did not break eye contact for the remainder of the inning, even during a foul ball that nearly hit her in the head.
Reports confirm that Courtney finally watched the rest of the game from the other side of the dugout where she couldn’t be seen by Kristin.
